Taking nothing away from Un Flic which is definitely quality, for me Melville's absolute best films are Le Samourai and Le Cercle Rouge. The man certainly new his way around a good crime thriller!

Great picks for Melville films. I think Shadows or Le Doulos are my favorites of his.

Un Flic is an odd film, deliberately so I think...I reckon Melville knew that the model work looked like kid's toys, I'm sure it was done on purpose because there is an equally poor piece of set work masquerading as a street. Love the shot where Delon looks at the dead face of the prostitute. Also a track from Michel Colombier's album "Wings" is used to great effect very briefly near the beginning.

I'd rate L'Armee Des Hombres as my favourite...it's just so well made & moving (with one of the greatest themes ever by Eric Demarsan), the nightime shot of the beach with the cliff is incredible, not sure why the opening shot is regarded by Melville as the best thing he ever did, it doesn't strike me as that impressive. Le Cercle Rouge comes second, though it is too long. Le Samourai is a little too "straight" for me.
